Welcome to Cairo

Click for Cairo, Egypt Forecast

Africa's biggest and busiest city it has an atmosphere of its own. It only stops for a few hours a day. You certainly will not get much time to rest while here. But never the less, home of the imposing Pyramids,The Sphinx,The Blue Mosque and of course the Museum.

If you come from the countryside, you will hate this place. Cars cars and more cars. Three days are enough here. This picture was taken 22 floors up the noise was terrible from the traffic.

The city is really bustling all the time .There are some great sights to see,but the city centre is just too hectic.

All though there are some good sights to see, there are some not so nice just around the corner.

Places To Go
Pyramids at Giza

Well of course you have to see these. This is what everyone wants to see. They are about 30 minutes from the city center on the edge of the desert and are worth every bit of money you spent to get here.

The site of the Pyramids is very large its only when you get close to them that you see how big they are.

Cheops,Chephren and Mikerinos. The tombs of the nobles and priest's have recently been opened to the public.

How big,you must be joking. St Paul's hasn't got anything on me. The Sphinx is in the same place only about 10 minutes walk from the Pyramids. While at the Pyramids have a look at the old boat that was found in the area, the guides seem to forget about this.

The Sphinx

More people have cast an eye on him though the ages than you have had hot dinners.See the sound and light show its really good.

There are lots of other sights to see, temples, churches all with large statues.

When I said big I meant it. Not only how did they make them how did they move them about without a crane.

The Citidel Mosque
Citidels Mosque

Citadel is the old fortress built by Salah El-Din El- Ayyubi founder of the Ayubbid dynasty (1171 - 1250). It now encompasses the mosque of Mohammed Ali, the jewel Museum, the Cairo Carriage Museum (a comprehensive collection of royal carriages dating from the time of Khedive Ismail and the opening of the Suez Canal), displays of coachmen's livery, uniforms, harnesses, saddles, horse furni-ture, paintings and the Military Museum. Open daily 9am to 4pm. Entrance fee LE 20 for non-Egyptians.

This is the court yard when you enter the main hall you will be asked to remove your shoes. Well worth a visit

Bazaar

( Khan-El- Khalili souk )

The old Bazaar in Cairo is worth a look if you have time but is much the same as you will see in the other places that you visit. Don't give the beggars any money as you will have every one of them following you.

Alexandria

If you decide to stay outside of the city near the pyramids you can get a taxi to Alexandria for the day. Mind you the taxis are very old and the trip will take about 4 hours but well worth it. Just ask a taxi driver outside of your hotel what price to take you. We paid about £60 for 4 people for the day, which included food and entrance to all sites. Catacombs of Kom El-Shoqafa are really worth the effort. Mind you when you get back you will be tired and will not want to do anything else that night.

Museum

If you stay in the city center do this trip yourself as it is only a short walk to the Museum. With the tour operators you do not get enough time to see everything.

Places To Stay
  • Cairo Hilton Nice hotel but very noisy in the city center ,
closer to the airport so you will be dropped of first.Name says it all.
  • Cairo Sheraton
Haven't stayed there, but if like all Sheraton s it must be good.Likewise it is close to all the traffic, might be to noisy.
  • Movenpick Cairo Pyramids
Nice hotel situated outside the city near the Pyramids.Food is okay,I have had no problems here myself.Would stay here again.
  • Mena House Oberoi
Again situated near the Pyramids another good hotel.proberly better than Movenpick.
General

I would stay on the outside of the city as it is much more relaxing and you can walk to the Pyramids with ease. Drawbacks. You are last drop off when you arrive from the airport it takes nearly two hours if it is busy from the time you leave the airport. Understandable you are the first to be picked up when it is time to leave . I have stayed both in the city center and outside, I believe the latter is the best idea.

Overall View of Cairo

A noisy place that you will not want to visit again in a hurry.3 days is enough time to see what you want.I say this as a tourist point of view but of course you could spend that amount of time in the museum if you were to look at every thing. If asked don't bother to go to El Farhoum its not worth it.
