Aswan

It is some time since I went to Aswan so some of the details about Hotels could have changed . I have noticed that some are not mentioned in the tour brochures now.

Aswan is hotter

than Cairo or Luxor, I normally say 10 degrees more than Luxor, most years this seems to be true but not always. At the end of the Nile by the high dam, this is a great place to have a trip in a fuluca.

Like most towns in Egypt Aswan is based around the Nile. The town is much like Luxor, with its markets and dusty streets. Take a horse drawn carriage trip from your hotel to the town and back.

Places To Go

Temple of Philae

A short boat trip to see this Temple. It was moved to this position as the water started to rise after the dam was finished. this is only a short trip but well worth going to see.

There are always plenty of people on the trips admiring the endless sights.

This trip is usually done at the same time as the Great Dam.It will take up a morning Then back to the Hotel for a drink.

Don't forget to see the sound and light show.

High Dam

The High Dam is a bit disappointing as it does not seem that high. The view back down the Nile is very nice and it seems a waste not to visit while you are in Aswan.

Elephantine Island.

Not all Egypt is desert. You can spend a few hours on this island in the middle of the Nile, take a small motor boat or fuluca trip and have a nice cool drink while there.

Aga Khan

If you like a bit of a climb try this it is well worth the hike. The view is quite breathtaking. You will get pestered to buy something from the market as you climb the steps. If you don't want anything just keep walking. If you decide to buy don't pay to much.

Abu Simbel

Located some 280 km south of Aswam on the banks of lake Nasser comprising of two temples built by Ramses11 to honour himself and his wife Nefertari

A must if you are this close. It is expensive by plane about (£210 by TourOperator)( £80 do it yourself). By road about £79, these are the prices being charged by the Tour Operators this year(2000). You can do it by taxi for a fraction of the cost it takes about 4 hours but it is hot, hot I said and I mean it. What ever you do do not miss this trip. If you go by plane, the guide will tell you to get the same plane back don't take any notice as it is a shuttle service he only wants you back so his day is finished. When I went I followed his instructions and only had two hours there, not enough time to take it all in.

As you approach this great temple you will wonder how on earth did they move it to here. There is a video of the operation that you can get if you want to.
This surely is one of the greatest feats of modern times. This place is really awesome when you see the size of the statues.

By the way the one in the middle is not part of it she came with me.

Well now you see the size.Do not miss this .
Sofitel Old Cateract
To me disappointing .All hype surrounding the book death on the Nile. Lovely gardens, big rooms (my was full of mozzies) Not again, thank you.
New Caterac.
Apartment style accommodation ,to me better than the Old Cateract.Only next door so if you want to sit on the terrace of the Old Cateract,no problem.
Oberoi
This is the place to stay. Lovely views.never heard of a complaint here.1st on list.

Overall view of Aswan

Once again you have to go to Aswan ,that's what you are here for. Can be a bit sandy as they suffer from sand storms but that will be the luck of the game. Take a fuluca on the river as the sun goes down, you might have to row back if the wind drops, I have had many a laugh when this has happened. As it is a few years since I was there, by now they should have trips on Lake Nasser as it was talked about at that time. Possible there will be fishing in the Great Lakes as well by now. The fish are big, I will visit again to have a go. As you will not stay here long it will be a good part of your holiday whether the start or the finish. You will not forget the sights.
